tech talk

this morning's bad news:
a friend's father has died.
the positive spin is that the passing was anticipated
and he had more-or-less already made his peace.
and on we go.

.

in weather news:
it’s snowing.
it never snows this early 'round here.
i hope it isn’t an omen for the coming winter.

by mid afternoon the snow has stopped.

.

the other day when audio engineer don came over,
we discussed the difference it makes when near-field monitors
are set up in their recommended positions.  the speakers in my home
studio are Dynaudio BM15As (before that, i used Tannoy BPM 6.5 IIs).
i like the Dynaudios because they sound full at quiet listening levels.
they also sound like music.

they are designed to stand vertically but for whatever reasons i’d
mounted them horizontally.  after our discussion, i placed them
in the recommended position.  and sure enough, the imaging
is so much better.  like getting new speakers.

i bought them from Chris Walla, ex of Death Cab For Cutie.
he upgraded and i got these in the sale.
already broken in and everything.

interestingly, i'm told the once ubiquitous Yamaha NS 10s were designed to stand vertically.
yet every studio in the known universe places then horizontally.  what would happen if...

...they were all put in a pile and burnt to cinders?
